Smaller carbon footprint

From the store to the end user: the way packaging is stored and transported affects the efficiency of logistics as well as CO₂ emissions. Rob: “Is a package large or difficult to stack? Then it takes up unnecessary space, leading to additional transport movements.” Flexible packaging, such as a pouch, offers a smart solution for this. “Unlike rigid packaging, such as glass or plastic jars, a pouch adapts to the shape of the product,” Rob explains. “As a result, more products fit in one shipment and the available space is used optimally.” In addition, pouches are much lighter than traditional packaging. “For 500 grams of supplements, a plastic jar easily weighs 50 grams, whereas a pouch requires much less material. Less weight and more efficient storage mean fewer transport movements and thus a smaller carbon footprint.” Moreover, pouches are so compact that they often just fit through the mailbox. Convenient for the consumer and better for the environment!

Preventing food waste

Not only CO₂ emissions are a global problem, but food waste is also a major challenge. Rob explains that the right packaging plays a crucial role in preventing this. “Oversized packaging increases the risk of a product spoiling before it is fully consumed. This leads to waste not only of the food itself, but also of all the resources used in its production. Think water, energy and farmland.” How can you prevent food waste as much as possible with your packaging? Rob: “Good packaging should be made of airtight materials that protect against oxygen, moisture and light – the three main causes of food spoilage. It is also important that the packaging be resealable. This allows the consumer to easily use the product multiple times without deteriorating quality. Pouches offer plenty of opportunities for this.”

Mono-material (mono-PE or mono-PP)

So what is environmentally friendly packaging? Rob explains: “A lot of packaging consists of multiple materials – think plastic with a layer of metal or paper. Those combinations are difficult to recycle and often just end up in the residual waste. That’s a waste, of course. What you can do better is to choose packaging made of a single material (mono-material), such as mono-PE or mono-PP. These are plastics that consist entirely of one raw material and are therefore easy to recycle. They are light, flexible and ideal for all kinds of products. This way you contribute to less waste and less CO₂ emissions, without compromising on quality.”

Laws and regulations

In addition to a sustainable brand strategy, you must also consider legislation. Starting in 2030, all packaging in Europe must comply with the new PPWR regulations and be economically viable to recycle. “This should ensure that packaging is less harmful to the environment and is better recycled,” Rob explains. So what is environmentally friendly and future-proof packaging? “A pouch made of mono-material, such as PE or PP. This type of packaging not only helps reduce CO₂ emissions, but also makes recycling much easier.”

In Illustrator, set the “Grid effects document settings” to 300 dpi.

In terms of design, you may make it as fancy or crazy as you want, but keep in mind that printing will be done in CMYK. Therefore, convert any spot colors and linked images to CMYK. If you want a see-through window in your pouch, make sure to use a proper white form. Trapping is not necessary. Contour all text to avoid font conflicts.

If your order needs more urgency we can also help you. Please contact us when an urgent delivery within 10 working days is necessary. The Pouch Factory can handle orders from 1,000 pieces per pouch design.

All packages you receive from us are custom-made especially for you. This means that orders up to 5,000 euros must be paid in full in advance. For orders with amounts higher than 5,000 euros, only a down payment of 50% of the order value is required immediately. You can easily pay the next 50% up to 14 days after receiving shipment.
